Timber industry trends 2026: Insights from our Sydney meetup

Last week we brought the Timber Meetup to Sydney and even a rainy day couldn't keep the timber industry from showing up.

After the conversations we had at our first meetup in Melbourne back in February, we were keen to hear how things looked from a NSW perspective. Same format: no slide decks, no sales pitches. Just timber people sharing a meal, swapping stories and talking shop.

And just like Melbourne, the depth of conversation surprised us in the best possible way.

Here are the key themes that came up around the table.

1. Supply: Still the elephant in the room

Supply pressures didn't just come up, they dominated. Whether it is tightening restrictions on native logging, the ongoing challenge of managing import volumes or simply trying to get consistent product to customers on time, availability remains one of the biggest headaches in the industry right now.

What was striking was how many different businesses were navigating the same issue in different ways. There is no single answer but there was a shared recognition that the businesses who manage their supply chains with more visibility and discipline are better placed to absorb the shocks.

2. Standing out in a crowded market

The second big theme was product differentiation. When price pressure is coming from all directions (e.g. imports, local competitors, customer expectations), how do you make the case for your product and your service?

The conversation got genuinely interesting here. Differentiation isn't always about the timber itself. It is often about reliability, relationships and the ability to give customers confidence that what they ordered will arrive correctly and on time. In a market where margins are tight, being the business that people trust becomes a real competitive advantage.

3. The competition question

Closely tied to differentiation was a broader conversation about increasing competition in the market. New players, more accessible imports and customers who are more price-aware than ever are changing the landscape.

The veterans in the room had a similar message to what we heard in Melbourne: the businesses that will come out ahead are the ones investing now in their processes, their systems and their people rather than waiting for conditions to improve.

The bigger picture

What the Sydney meetup reinforced is that the challenges facing the timber industry aren't unique to one state or one type of business. Whether you are in Victoria or NSW, the themes of supply, differentiation and competitive pressure are universal.

But so is the resilience. The people around that table weren't there to complain. They were there to compare notes, share experience and figure things out together. That energy is exactly what this community is built on.

Thanks to everyone who braved the Sydney rain to join us. Your openness and candour made it worth every wet commute.

The Timber Meetup community is growing and we are already looking forward to the next one. If you are not in the loop yet, stay tuned. We would love to have you at a future event.
